bush league.
teenage boys need bush.

when i was thirteen, i loved the alternative rock band bush. as with anything else, there were several contributing factors: i thought they were cool, they were on all the covers to my favorite magazines, my friends all dug them, and i found a potato that struck an uncanny semblance to lead vocalist gavin rossdale. also, they had these “deep” lyrics that i considered genius because they didn’t make any sense. but hey, i figured i was thirteen and stupid.

the following is just a small sample of the lyrics from bush’s first album “sixteen stone.”

track 1: everything zen: “there’s no sex in your violence.” “minnie mouse has grown up a cow / dave's on sale again / we kissy kiss in the rear view.”

my interpretation: you are violating me in more of a “law and order: criminal intent” way than a “law and order: special victims unit” kind of way. also, childhood dreams have become bloated and less appealing with the progression of adulthood. by the way, my friend dave is on sale. and i like you, so let’s make out in the back seat?

track 3: bomb: “jekyll in you, brings out the wired in me / i have no defense, i'm all that you see / the night is a bomb blast / the night is on fire / sing with me in the gasoline choir.”

my interpretation: your dark side makes me feel like an electrician. i am like the kansas city chiefs. when i was in israel, i sang in a choir.

track 4: little things:"i touch your mouth / my willy is food / addicted to love / i'm addicted to fools, shit.”

my interpretation: i can’t stop letting foolish people give me oral sex... shit.

track 7: machinehead: “blood is like wine, unconscious all the time.”

my interpretation: blood is red, just like wine is sometimes. and when you drink too much wine (or blood, for that matter)... you are no longer able to operate heavy machinery. which may have led to the title of the song (?)

track 8: testosterone: "I'm real straight, you wanna see my peccadillos? / hot dog 7:30 every morning"

my interpretation: i’m gay.

track 10: glycerine: “glycerine.”

my interpretation: ?

track 12: x-girlfriend: “you only call me when you're down / you only call me when you're down / you only call me when you're down / you only call me when you're down.” [complete song lyrics]

my interpretation: the label says we need twelve songs.

conclusion: bush had nothing to say, so they sat around one night with chinese take-out and three cases of mountain dew... drafting lyrics that feigned the aid of drugs while conspiring to dupe thirteen year old boys into thinking that they were cutting-edge poets with very cryptic lyrics to their assembly-line songs.

by the way, i think i own too many sweaters.
