playground math.
homework sucks

it's official. my algebra teacher, mr. karolyi, is as bitter as one of those salt licks that deer like. well, actually that's just an expression. i've never actually licked one, because: (a) my grandma told me never to put my mouth where a deer's mouth has been, and (b) she also told me that kids these days need to watch their sodium intake. but, deer saliva and salt... that’s bitter, man.

anyway, apparently mr. karolyi grew up in a small town in romania. when he was seventeen, his parents took him on vacation to cuba. on the last night of their trip, he snuck out of the place they were staying, stole a raft, and defected to the united states.

he had wanted to follow the “american dream” to become an astronaut; however, being a romanian... and a refugee... it wasn't in the cards. rejected from nasa because their romanian quota was already filled-- and under contract for several years-- he apparently was reduced to becoming a math teacher at my high school in pennsylvania.

anyway, he's always been negative... but he's been getting weirder and weirder. like, he keeps talking about how he just wants to run outside and start chasing squirrels. he says that if he catches one, he’ll punt it into the woods and scream.

today, he told us not to do any math homework anymore, because “even if you’re smart it won't get you anywhere.” here, i'll just type out my notes from today:

algebra : nov. 18, 2003

coordinate system-- a coordinate plane separated into four equal regions by two intersecting number lines called axes.

example: a playground superimposed (?) on the coordinate system = teaches kids that they're never gonna amount to anything. ever. so stop trying so [word im not allowed to write in school] hard.

x-axis: the horizontal number line which helps to form the coordinate system.
playground example: swing set. you can swing back and forth all you want. but you'll never get anywhere. bound by chains that harness you to gravity. if you try to fly, you’ll fall and break several ribs.

y-axis: the vertical number line which helps to form the c.s.
playground example: see saw. you can go up and down all you want. but, again, you'll never get anywhere. in life, you’re held back by friends. if you jump off, they'll get a "cherry bump,” be super pissed, and hate you forever.

z-axis: the diagonal number line that represents the third dimension in the c.s.
playground example: merry go round. your life is just spinning in circles. you’ll never make any forward steps. especially after a couple lonely bloody marys (?).

that's straight from my notebook. everything except something shroeder drew that's either a bowling ball with a big thumb hole or this girl, amanda drake, making the "o" face.

just as mr. karolyi was blabbering about how slides were just “staircases to an imminent descent back to a hopeless reality” and something about jungle-gyms being caged play-pens, the bell rang. phew.

as we walked out, mr. karolyi seemed to brighten. “hey, have a good day,” he said. “the world is your playground. too bad it’s all just fire and brimstone.”
